Malta

Malta: A Hidden Gem for Canadians

As we stepped off the plane in Malta, we knew we were in for a treat. This tiny island nation in the Mediterranean has long been a popular destination for Europeans, but it's a gem that's still relatively unknown to Canadians. And that's a shame, because Malta has a wealth of history, culture, and natural beauty that's sure to captivate even the most seasoned traveler.

Our journey began in the charming town of Birżebbuġa, where we settled into the luxurious Sand Dune Hotel. This tranquil oasis offered a perfect blend of comfort and style, with its sleek design and picturesque views. The hotel's breakfast spread was a delightful start to each day, featuring the famous Maltese pistachio croissant, a sweet and flaky pastry that set the tone for our culinary explorations.

From Birżebbuġa, we embarked on a 15km walk to Marsaxlokk, a traditional fishing village known for its vibrant market. The bustling stalls offered a glimpse into local life, with an array of fresh produce, seafood, and handmade crafts on display. As we strolled through the village, we made our way to St. Peter's Pool, a secluded cove with crystal-clear waters and a stunning backdrop of limestone cliffs. The pool's tranquil atmosphere and picturesque scenery made it a perfect spot to relax and soak up the sun.

As the day drew to a close, we headed to Angelina's, a local restaurant renowned for its exquisite cuisine. The salmon and caviar pasta was a highlight, with its delicate flavors and impeccable presentation.

The following day, we took the bus to Valletta, the capital city of Malta, with its rich history and stunning architecture. We had planned to visit the Blue Lagoon on the island of Comino, and after a chance visit to the Northern Point ferry terminal, Comino Ferries was able to secure tickets for us. The Blue Lagoon was everything we had hoped for – a turquoise paradise surrounded by white sandy beaches and limestone cliffs. While it was bustling with tourists, the beauty of the lagoon shone through, and we enjoyed a refreshing swim in its crystal-clear waters. A highlight of our visit was trying the crispy chicken wrap from Snack Box, a local food truck that served up delicious street food.

In Valletta, we marveled at the city's historical buildings, took in the stunning views of the ocean, and explored the narrow streets lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants. The city's unique blend of Baroque architecture and modern charm made it a fascinating place to discover.

On our final day, we embarked on a local hike to a hidden gem – a secluded swim spot that offered breathtaking views and a tranquil atmosphere. It was the perfect way to conclude our Maltese adventure, with its stunning landscapes, rich history, and warm hospitality leaving a lasting impression on our hearts.

Malta may be a small island nation, but it's a destination that's sure to captivate Canadians and travelers from around the world. With its rich history, stunning natural beauty, and warm hospitality, Malta is a hidden gem that's waiting to be discovered. So why not add it to your bucket list? You won't be disappointed.
